Today I’ll be discussing Linkedin on CelebrityU Radio, at 3pm Central time, with Travis Blythe from Corner6Labs. Travis is a regular co-host on this show each week on Thursdays from 2-4PM with host, Kathy Hines. I will be on to talk about using Linkedin for business marketing from an entrepreneur’s perspective, and using Linkedin for job search from a recruiter’s perspective.

Luis Gray has a nice video on his site discussing the common misconceptions about Linkedin. I have listed some of those along with a couple of my own to create the following list. Luis’ video with Mark Perl, a renowned LinkedIn expert is below as well.
5. My network is large enough. I don’t need any more connections. WRONG! You can’t measure the connections of those you have not yet connected with. These 2nd level connections are how your own network grows exponentially. And you can’t forecast your future business or job needs. So why limit your possibilities?
4. I have Google, I don’t need Linkedin. WRONG! Linkedin is the only large social network tailored specifically for one-to-one connections for business. If you are in business or are a jobseeker, you cannot dismiss that every Fortune 500 company has a presence on Linkedin, and that you can contact people within those companies directly by job title and location.
3. No one has contacted me, so Linkedin is useless. WRONG! Linkedin is not a job board where you can just post your resume and pray someone notices. In contrast to job boards, you can, and should, actually have conversations with people, who you want to work with, in groups and in question/answer areas on Linkedin. You can also recommend people and refresh your profile by posting content that positions you as a trusted expert.
2. I don’t need to put my job history or descriptions on Linkedin. WRONG! Businesses and recruiters search Linkedin much like they do Google to find the people they want to connect with. If you don’t have keywords in your profile, in places where they can be seen in context - like job descriptions, and searched for, you are unlikely to be found or contacted.
1. Linkedin is not a place for active jobseekers. WRONG! Recruiters can search Linkedin for the keywords "career opportunities" in user profiles. If you are open to hearing about jobs that fit you, check the box next to "career opportunities" in your profile editor under the things you are "interested in". After all, a career opportunity could be a promotion within your current company. Or it could be your next customer.
